To install the Kugel patch, the physician must fold the patch so it will fit into the incision. The memory recoil ring is then supposed to "pop" the patch back into shape. But the memory recoil bring often breaks, leading to medical problems.
The memory recoil ring is made of plastic, and is "welded" together into a ring. The welds are prone to fail, which can cause the plastic to leave the ring and cause serious injuries to the unlucky recipient of the defective patch.
The recaled Kugel patches are the "Large Circle" and the "Large Oval" variety. I can put you in touch with a Kugel attorney who can help you determine whether you have a defective patch.
This diagram shows how the Kugel patch prevents the intestine from pushing through into the abdominal cavity. Sadly, the defective memory recoil ring can itself go into the abdominal cavity.
